Lacquer tapping refers to the art of drawing sap that can be used as the raw material of lacquer from lacquer trees. Lacquer tappers engage in such tasks. They first scratch lacquer trees lightly with a sickle and then scoop the sap that seeps out with a spatula for use as the raw material for lacquer.
One of the characteristics of lacquer is that it is more resistant to moisture, acidity and alkalinity than other natural painting materials.
Moreover, in the Aizu area, candles are made from lacquer tree nuts.
