Kate-meshi
Kate-meshi means boiled rice mixed with vegetables and other ingredients. Mixed ingredients, including vegetables, mountain herbs, and tree nuts, were called “kate.” When it remained cold during the summer and the harvest was small, the percentage of rice dropped and that of kate gradually increased. When even less food was available, the paste made by extracting starch from bracken roots (root cake) was also eaten.
